Best Local/Independent Coffee Shops in Sunderland

Sunderland is quickly becoming a hub of local and independent businesses, with many serving incredible coffee. As someone who is a coffee lover, I really enjoy trying all the different cups from these incredibly places. Right now, with the world being the way it is, having a nice coffee is often the highlight of my day! So here is a list of my favourites, and the ones I am yet to try, most of which are open for takeout right now.

  • YOLO Coffee
    Located at the Stack Seaburn, YOLO coffee has a great tasting coffee. However, their special hot chocolates are incredible. I cant decide which is better, their chocolate orange or cherry bakewell.

  • Flamingo Coffee Seaham
    It was fairly recently when this was finally tried, and I have no idea why we waited so long. The coffee is so good and the view wasn’t half bad. I can’t wait to visit in the summer under normal conditions, sitting outside with an iced latte!

  • Grinder Coffee
    I know I big up Grinder a lot, but its only because I truly love the business! The coffee is always great, and the lads who own it are just lovely people. If you haven’t been, trust me this is not one to miss!

  • Toney Minchella, Whitburn Bents
    One of the more well known local businesses in the city and have been in operation since 1935! Their coffee bar at Whitburn Bents is in an idea location for a walk along the clifftops.

  • Fausto Coffee
    Sat in a prime location at Roker Pier Point, Fausto is a great place to stop for coffee replenishment.

  • Love Lily
    Another great place in Roker is of course Love Lily. Famous for their pancakes and desserts, this spot is a great place if you’re a sweet tooth. And their coffee menu is full of the usual coffees, and speciality ones.

  • Coles Kitchen Roker
    This place keeps popping up on my Instagram feed, and I am desperate to try it! Their sandwiches look incredible, and the I’ve heard good things about the coffee too!

  • Coffeehous Sunderland
    This beautiful coffee shop is high on my list of places to try! Their Instagram feed is full of amazing latte art, cakes and sandwiches which all look delicious.
