One of the best things about autumn is pumpkin picking in the North East. And a great place to do that is at Brockbushes Farm, Northumberland. They have a great variety of pumpkins all at reasonable prices too!

Let’s get into it!

Getting There:

Brockbushes farm is in Northumberland and is about a 40-minute drive from Sunderland.

Parking is also included in your ticket price, so you don’t need to worry about that. However, the car park is essentially a field so keep that in mind when driving up if it has been raining! You don’t want to get stuck in the mud.

Tickets for Pumpkin Picking

To gain access to the fields you must have pre-booked your tickets and timeslots. And this will sell out very quickly so if you want to go, get in ASAP!

The dates they have available for this October are:

1st & 2nd, 8th & 9th, then 15th-31st October

The field opens at 9am and the last entry is 4pm. The timeslots are hourly so you can book any hour on hour between 9am-4pm. However, there is no time limit once you are on the field. You can spend as much or as little time there as you want!

We went back in October 2020, which was in between lockdowns etc. And even though all of that was going on I thought the whole thing was very well managed. Even though people has timeslots on the field it never felt like there were too many people about which I think is why they kept it up.

Tickets cost £2pp (under 3s go free).

Included in your ticket is access to the field, as well as all the photo opportunities they have there. You can borrow a wheelbarrow (and you will need one!!) to carry all the pumpkins.

Also on site is their farm shop which will be open from 9:30am every day the pumpkin picking is on. There were also rides, face painters, an outside covered seating area and new for the 2022 season is ten-pin bowling which will be a right laugh!

You can book your tickets from the Brocksbushes website HERE!

The Pumpkins at Brocksbushes

This is the important bit! For the 2022 season, Brocksbushes have doubled the size of the field. I went in 2020 and thought it was a huge site so I can only imagine how big it is now!

They are growing a total of 20 different varieties of pumpkins, including white and grey ones.

The prices of the pumpkins themselves range from £1.50 to £7 depending on size. When we visited I bought a giant one which I thought for £7 wasn’t too bad!

As far as costs, I know some other pumpkin picking places take your ticket cost off the pumpkins you buy. However, I think the beauty of the system here is that you don’t have to buy any pumpkins for it to be worth it. For example, if you are bringing your kids who want pumpkins, you don’t then have to buy more than you want. And for the sake of £2, you are getting a great day out!

What is nearby?

If you want to make a full day of your time in Northumberland, Brocksbushes is right next to the town of Corbidge which is a beautiful little place.

there is a great free car park just a short walk over the bridge into Corbridge itself.

For food, I recommend either The Heart of Northumberland or The Black Bull.

You could also visit Hexham which is just a little further along the road. This is another beautiful little place in Northumberland and one which you could easily spend the better part of a day in!

The best place to park here is the Wentworth car park. It is a free car park next to the main street and isn’t very far to walk at all.

Alternatively, from here you are right in the heart of Hadrian’s Wall country so you could visit some of the great sites along it, such as Sycamore Gap, or the Roman Army Museum and walk from there.

Pumpkin Picking in Northumberland

There aren’t a great deal of pumpkin picking sites in the North East, however, if you are looking for one which can be a real day out and something to look forward to (which won’t break the bank) Brockbushes is a good shout. You can extend the day and make the drive up with it by visiting somewhere like Corbridge or having a walk along Hadrian’s Wall etc.
