Grinder Coffee is in my opinion, the best coffee in Sunderland. And I’m not the only one who thinks that. Since opening in 2019, the shop has grown a huge local following of others who all agree that their coffee is amazing. So much so, that they have now been able to open up a second shop!
Before I get into it, it would be great if you could drop your email address below to be notified of all my upcoming posts!
Grinder Coffee, Durham Road
The first one is located on Durham Road, near the University metro station. If you don’t know where this one is, look for the bright yellow building. I’m pretty sure they painted it that colour so they didn’t have to keep explaining where they were!!
For the majority of the time the Durham Road location has been open, it has been takeaway only. However, in recent months they have been able to ass in a couple of seats in the window so you can watch the world go by while you enjoy your coffee.
The original shop will still be open and running alongside the new one so don’t worry about your favourite closing!
Grinder Coffee Central, Waterloo Place
Over the last few months, the lads have been teasing us with little sneak peeks of the new store, but at last, it is open!
The new Grinder Coffee had its soft launch on the 1st of February. And while they are up and running, they haven’t quite got everything in place so if you are going to pay them a visit over the course of the next couple of months, be patient with them.
However, I must point out that when we visited on the 2nd (the day after opening), the place didn’t feel like it had just opened. I think by being a regular customer of the OG shop this new one feels familiar already. And the owners have done an amazing job with their decor.
Grinder Coffee Central is located within the Sunderland Community Arts Centre on Waterloo Place. For those who are unsure of where it is, head down Blandford Street towards Specsavers and turn right as if you’re heading to Sinatras. It’s on the right-hand side of the road.
Address: Hills Arts Centre, 17-18 Waterloo Pl, Sunderland SR1 3HT
As soon as you open the door, the welcoming smell of coffee hits you and you know you’re in the right place!
When compared to the last store the new one has more indoor tables, so you can sit and enjoy your coffee. Or, you are right in the town centre so if you have some errands to run or fancy a walk through Mowbray Park then you are in a great place to do so.
The entire product range from Grinder is supplied from other small independent businesses. From the beans ground to make the coffee to the cakes they serve. They even sell items from local businesses such as posters, candles and dry flower arrangements from various businesses.
My personal favourite that they sell is the delicious brownies, especially the Nutella ones! But of course, nothing beats their coffee, which is without a doubt, the best coffee in Sunderland.
If you are planning a visit, here are the current open hours for the central shop:
Monday – Saturday: 9-4
These open hours may change so always check ahead, just in case!
Despite being open only a few days, it’s clear that the new Grinder Central will become a great part of the future of Sunderland. I cannot wait to keep popping back over the next few months and see the finishing touches come together. And if you haven’t been down yet then I implore you to go and try the best coffee in the city. Exciting times lie ahead!
